For patients requiring complex oral rehabilitation, data collection is necessary for the most accurate diagnosis and the creation of the most appropriate treatment plan.
The first step in developing a data collection is the patient's functional chart. This helps us gather as much information as possible about the facial muscle groups, the temporomandibular joint, and many other aspects that lead us to a certain diagnosis regarding the dental pathology the patient is facing.
The next stage in data collection involves dental and portrait photography. These are later added to the complete patient analysis. To supplement the dental and portrait photos, we use a thermal imaging camera to precisely visualize the facial muscle groups that show an increased degree of muscle activity.
All these steps are followed by a digital scan, where with the help of the intraoral scanner, the dental arches and the initial bite the patient has at the time of their presentation at the dental clinic are scanned.
Subsequently, the dentist analyzes mandibular dynamics, urging the patient to perform the most natural forward propulsion movements, i.e., pushing the mandible forward, and other movements such as mastication and swallowing.
This analysis of mandibular dynamics is very important and extremely necessary as it varies from patient to patient. Therefore, mandibular movements must be analyzed thoroughly and with great precision in order to accurately determine the patient's type of chewing and type of swallowing.
Another very important analysis within dental data collection is the analysis of radiological examinations. The patient is recommended to undergo a computed tomography (CT) scan, so that the doctor can visualize the temporomandibular joint and other maxillary and mandibular areas in three dimensions, which are of interest for establishing a certain diagnosis and for drafting the future treatment plan.
After data collection is complete, the case is discussed with the entire medical team, with each specialist contributing their expertise according to their field. After the diagnosis is explained and its implications are understood by the patient, they have the freedom to choose the optimal or compromise option for the treatment plan, after which the actual treatment plan will commence.
